Job Description for AmeriCorps* VISTA member to support SHINE's Health Literacy Initiative at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA  DEADLINE to apply is May 15, 2007

  • Develop marketing and public relations materials

  • Coordinate health professions students in student-led health education activities at community sites

  • Assist with in-class training of student participants

  • Document health education activities at community sites

  • Conduct research into the health literacy needs of elder immigrants and refugees

  • Research funding opportunities

  • Work with project staff to organize special events for Project SHINE

  • Compile information for reports to funders

  • Develop content for Project SHINE’s national and local program Web sites

  • Maintain participant databases

Skills and Qualifications Desired

  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills
  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience working with people from many different language and cultural backgrounds
  • Experience working in urban communities
  • Experience in tutoring adults, preferably related to ESL and literacy
  • Experience in public speaking and community outreach

Sincere interest in literacy, citizenship, immigration, community and aging issues

  • Bilingual skills preferred (especially Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese and Spanish)
  • Familiarity with Word, Access and Excel programs

 



Job Description for AmeriCorps* VISTA members to support local SHINE programs at one of our 17 consortium campuses:

Job Description for AmeriCorps* VISTA member to support local SHINE programs (Please note that individual job descriptions may differ slightly at each campus location.)

The VISTA members will develop more effective systems for student-tutor recruitment and provide on-going communication and monitoring of community sites in which tutoring takes place. VISTA members will assist in developing a student leadership plan and end-of-semester reflection sessions, including designing training modules that can be disseminated nationally. Furthermore, the VISTA participants will enhance our efforts to ascertain senior immigrants’ needs by interviewing community partners and older immigrants and organizing instructional resources for older immigrants and refugees.

• Identify key contacts in student groups and make presentations about SHINE
• Develop and implement plan to more effectively involve SHINE tutors as student leaders.
• Maintain ongoing communication with community organizations at which tutoring takes place.
• Develop materials for SHINE community partners.
• Organize reflection sessions and end-of-semester celebrations.
• Collect and organize evaluation materials from elder learners, students and faculty members.
