The Seasons Made a Change, So Should You!

Blog tags:

As we say farewell to a very raining spring, it's time that we all think about making positive changes in our lives. For some, it's getting caught up on all of the books and magazines you actually wanted to read but couldn't, for others it's finally learning that program or technology that everyone is talking about and claiming to have used since its inception, and for others still, it's starting to become more involved in our communities... and getting little cash couldn't hurt either, right?

For those of you in the latter category, consider working with Project SHINE in the AmeriCorps Health Literacy program. Project SHINE Philadelphia is currently recruiting for its next cohort of AmeriCorps members to work in undeserved immigrant and refugee communities. The AmeriCorps program allows people of any age to share their knowledge in a community that greatly needs support. AmeriCorps members at SHINE promote a healthy communities and strengthen social connections by tutoring English, health literacy, healthy workshops and recreational activities. AmeriCorps members serve 9-10 hours per week and attend monthly trainings.

Members receive a $1,500 stipend and an $1,132 educational award. If you're 55 or older you have the choice of giving the education award to your child, grandchild, etc. Bilingual, bi cultural, retired individuals and those with health and/or ESL experience or working towards a career in health and/or ESL are in high demand. Questions and application requests may be sent to volunteer@templecil.org .The AmeriCorps position with SHINE is from September 2010 to May 2012, serving 9-10 hours a week.

If you're not in the Philadelphia area, try checking out a SHINE site in your area and see how you can spend those extra hours summer gives filling your Karma bank account!

Whatever your summer goals are, good luck and make it a summer to remember!
