Creating Authentic Materials and Activities for Adult ESL Classrooms is a resource that helps ESL tutor volunteers develop unique and effective materials and activities for their Adult ESL classrooms.

This resource is a tutor training kit for new ESL tutor volunteers.  It includes training in understand context, cultural humility, learning styles, teaching methods and assessment tools. 

Adult ESL Language and  Literacy Instruction:  A Vision and Action Agenda  for the 21st Century is a call-for-action paper by TESOL for major changes to American ESL programs including ways to make ESL programs more effective and easy to understand.

This resource is a powerpoint of the history of adult ESL instruction, including dates, graphics, data, and resources.

This resource is an online training session using doctor-patient scenarios to determine cultural competency. Using three scenarios/situations common to first contact with a patient, you will be given options from which to select an appropriate response. All information in the scenarios comes from either the patient's medical chart, or from information you gather as you see the patient for this first visit. While few answers are wrong, one answer uses more cultural sensitivity and maintains issues related patient dignity more than others. Explanations with the answers will provide information related to each response. Additional information is provided in the Summary section. The key concepts include: Recognizing barriers. Awareness of behavioral cues. Use of translators and interpreters. Social and historical experiences; immigration history. Cultural sensitivity.

Adult ESL Fact Sheet

Teachers are encouraged to use these standards as one tool in the development
of student-centered, contextualized instruction based on student need,
current best practice, and assessment information. The Suggested Daily
Living Themes and Topics were added during development to assist teachers
in preparing learner-centered, contextualized lessons. Another special
feature added during development is the Glossary, which gives common,
statewide definitions to educational terms used in ESL instruction.
We hope that Pennsylvania ESL teachers will find the ESL Content Standards
to be a valuable resource to assist in providing high-quality
instruction for our ESL population. The Pennsylvania ABLE Professional
Development Centers can offer support in implementing the ESL Content
