A field guide for tutors with information about ESL teaching
techniques. Includes step-by-step lesson planning and specific
activities geared for learners at various levels of English

Association
for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE)
AGHE
fosters research, instructional and service programs to enhance
the capacity of institutions of higher education in the field of
aging and to help make resources available to benefit the wider
community. This site offers a variety of information related to
aging, including a section on careers in the field.
Celebrating
Older Learners
This
site presents the report and proceedings from the Celebrating
Older Learners Seminar, held in March 2001 in the United
Kingdom. In addition to best practices and recommendations for
instruction of older learners, this site lists resources for
learning in later life.
Generations
Together
Based
at the University of Pittsburgh, Generations Together is a
center for intergenerational studies that helps professionals
acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills to integrate
intergenerational components into their work. This site offers a
section devoted specifically to intergenerational service
learning which offers an evaluation tool and publications.
Citizenship
U.S.
Immigration and Naturalization Service
The
official homepage of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service provides information on the requirements for
naturalization, a study guide, and an online exam. The Guide to
Naturalization, a downloadable guide providing information on
the benefits and responsibilities of citizenship, an overview of
the naturalization process, and eligibility requirements, is
available in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese and Vietnamese.
Citizenship Educator Orientation Packet
The Adult Learning Resource Center Developed a
Citizenship Educator Orientation Packet for teachers and tutors
to prepare learners for naturalization. The packet consists of three sections: Section 1. Components of Naturalization contains core documents and basic content necessary for citizenship preparation.
Section 2. Classroom Techniques offers teaching strategies and
activities to prepare learners for the USCIS naturalization
experience. Section 3. Citizenship Materials List includes a
wide range of citizenship resources. The materials in this
packet are the result of more than eight years of workshops and
program consultations in the area of citizenship preparation.

as a Second Language
About.com's
ESL Lesson Plans
An
excellent source of detailed lesson plans for your next tutoring
session. This site is especially helpful if your learner is at
the pre-beginner/pre-literate level. Look in the "Absolute
Beginner Exercises - 20 point program" for a set of twenty
detailed lesson plans. This site also provides lesson plans
appropriate for intermediate level learners.
Adult
ESOL Lesson Plans
The
collective effort of adult ESL teachers from Palm Beach County,
Florida, this site offers lesson plans and activities for
pre-beginner to advanced learners on a variety of topics,
including workforce development, telephone communication, and
grammar. Activity sheets are included for most lessons.
Boggle's
World ESL Resources
A
great source of new ideas if you find your tutoring sessions are
becoming a bit routine. This site offers crossword puzzles, word
searches, songs, worksheets, and other activities. Oriented
toward activities for elementary and middle school ESL learners,
some of these activities may be appropriate for adult learners
and there is a special section entitled ESL for Adults.
Dave's
ESL Café
You
can't get cappuccino at this website, but Dave's ESL Café is
open 24 hours a day and has great suggestions for livening up
your next tutoring session. Click on the 'ideas' link for
everything from instructions for teaching grammar to using games
in an ESL lesson.
ESL-Civics
Curriculum Designed for Very Beginning ESL Learners: The
Bright Ideas Curriculum
The Bright Ideas curriculum was designed for elderly learners
participating in community-based ESL programs. This
resource proves to be an excellent addition to any lesson in
developing oral English communication skills and providing
opportunities for learners to use these skills inside and
outside the classroom and community.
National
Center for ESL Literacy Education
A
national information center focusing on language and literacy
education for adults learning English, this site offers answers
to the most frequently asked questions about ESL literacy and
teaching techniques. You can also access ERIC Digests, which are
easily readable 2-3 page articles on a variety of topics related
to ESL instruction.
One
World, One People
Designed
by a New York City ESL teacher, this site is dedicated to ethnic
diversity and multiculturalism. It's a good resource for ESL
lessons activities, as well information and articles on
immigration and multilingualism. Provides links to a variety of
other sites regarding ESL instruction and immigrant/refugee
issues.
Immigration
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
In late 2002/early 2003, the responsibilities of the INS were
shifted to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In March
2003, the responsibility of providing immigration-related
services and benefits was transferred to the USCIS, a bureau of
the DHS. This link will take you to the USCIS homepage.
The
Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies
The
Balch Institute, a museum and archive located in Philadelphia,
is dedicated to promoting understanding and respect for
America's ethnic, racial and immigrant diversity through
exhibits and educational programming. This site offers profiles
and pictures of past exhibits on such topics as Ethnic Images in
Advertising, Ethnic Weddings in America, and the African
Immigrant Experience in Philadelphia. Their online catalog is
searchable on the web.
Center
for Migration Studies
Committed
to facilitating the study of demographic, social, historical and
economic aspects of migration and refugee movements, the Center
publishes a journal, a newsletter, and articles regarding
immigration and ethnic movements in the U.S. The card catalog of
its library - including over 21,000 volumes, 225 periodicals,
and 3,000 journal article reprints - is searchable on the web.
National
Immigration Forum
With
a pro-immigrant, advocacy stance, this site is a comprehensive
resource of information about the history and demographics of
U.S. immigration. A variety of materials are available through
the site, including The Immigration Policy Handbook, which
discusses current policy issues, immigration trends, and
analysis related to the debate over immigration policy in the
United States. The most recent version of the handbook includes
the implications of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,
on U.S. immigration policy.
HIAS Naturalization Brochure
A pdf document on the naturalization process created by HIAS
(Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society). They have a number of
brochures on other immigrant-related topics (e.g. asylum)-

U.S. Census 2000 Summary File 1
This website contains a breakdown of data from the Census 2000.
Immigration and Borders
The Immigration and Borders section on the DHS (Department of
Homeland Security) website, which includes information on
immigration and border control as well as links to other
websites and news stories.

National
Campus Compact
Developed
by a national coalition of college and universities committed to
the civic purpose of higher education, this site hosts an
extensive collection of syllabi and online articles, a database
of program models database best practices for campus engagement,
and resources for educators on how to use structured reflection
to enhance service-learning experiences.
National
Service Learning Clearinghouse
This
site offers a wealth of information about service learning from
elementary through higher education, including the definition
and history of service learning, toolkits for faculty members
and student leaders interested in creating or enhancing service
programs, and a list of service learning syllabi and curricula
organized by academic discipline. Also included are links to
listservs and websites about service learning.
