Project SHINE Learner Survey Instructions for Students
Learner Survey Administration
Project SHINE asks participating immigrants and refugees to
complete a survey at the end of each semester in order to
understand what they have learned and how to improve our
program.
The SHINE learner survey may be administered by students, site
coordinators, community partner staff or ESL/Citizenship
instructors. Survey administrators should explain the purpose of
the survey described above and emphasize that learners’ answers
will remain confidential. For the most part, however, we
anticipate that students will probably administer the learner
survey(s), collect the completed surveys and return them to the
SHINE office on their campus.
The survey is available in translation and may be downloaded
from the SHINE website at
http://www.projectshine.org/participants/learners Each
PDF file contains both the translated & English language
versions of the survey so that learners can choose which
language they would like to use to complete the survey and
students or others can provide assistance, if needed. In
addition, an English version of the learner survey is posted on
the SHINE website as we have done in past semesters so that
learners who are also working on developing their computer
skills may complete the survey directly online.
Students, site coordinators, community partner staff or
ESL/Citizenship instructors who are administering the learner
survey may provide assistance if requested. Administrators may
also provide clarification of survey questions and answers but
should not influence a learner’s response. If a learner is
unable to complete the survey due to limited literacy skills in
English or his/her native language, difficulty writing, or
vision problems, the survey may be administered orally.
In order to better protect the confidentiality of the learners
who complete each individual survey, we ask that sites provide
each learner with an envelope. Learners should be instructed to
put their completed survey into an envelope and seal it before
giving it to students, site coordinators, community partner
staff or ESL/Citizenship Instructors who would then either mail
the sealed envelopes (in bulk) or drop them off at the SHINE
office. We don't expect sites to provide postage for individual
envelopes but we do need to protect the confidentiality of the
learners who complete the survey and the integrity of their
responses.
