Unit Three - Managing Illness

The main focus of this unit is to make learners feel more comfortable talking about diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. This unit presents activities which provide information about these illnesses, and risk factors for developing them. Also, they will have the chance to read about the experiences of other immigrant elders who have dealt with these issues.

Click here for a Tutor’s Guide for this unit, which provides advice about teaching yes/ no and wh- questions, auxiliary verbs, and reductions. Because this unit deals with the potentially sensitive topic of illness, your learner may feel awkward talking about the disease outside of a medical setting. The tutor’s guide offers suggestions if your learner feels uncomfortable with any of the activities.
