Unit Two - The Hospital

The main focus of this unit is to make learners feel more comfortable communicating during a medical emergency. The activities in these lessons cover topics like calling 9-1-1, understanding a doctor’s pre-operative instructions, and knowing your rights as a patient.

Click here for a Tutor’s Guide for this unit, which provides advice about teaching the simple present, simple past, present perfect, and conditional tenses. This guide also gives tips on how to help your learner communicate in hospitals and during emergencies.

What is the difference between Reading and Writing Practice, Listening and Speaking Practice, and Real Practice modules?

Lesson One - Emergency

This lesson provides activities in which your learner can practice how to respond to emergency situations, how to call 9-1-1, and how to describe emergencies. There is also a focus on pronouncing numbers correctly, which can be particularly important when telling a 9-1-1 operator an address.
